Award-winning hospitality provider leading the way to a greener future.

Step into Net Zero supports businesses across Bedford Borough on their journey to becoming net zero. As part of the programme, we’re highlighting businesses throughout the region that are successfully implementing net zero strategies.

Wyboston Lakes Resort, a 380-acre site has evolved over the last 40 years to become the largest, single-site, privately owned conference centre in Northern Europe.

As one of the top 100 companies to work for, Wyboston Lakes not only has a passion for looking after their employees but also their environment. Their simple motto: More Sustainable, No Apology allows them to make bold decisions when reaching their sustainability goals and they make no apology for such decisions along the way.

Wyboston Lakes has created a culture of conscience in everything they do and the whole team is committed to doing all that they can to build a more sustainable future. Whether it’s the resident beehives within the resort, their zero waste to landfill, or the £5m commitment to their green energy roadmap – the resort really is driving forward in their efforts and is the perfect example to inspire all businesses.

Wyboston Lakes, led by Marketing Director & Sustainability lead, Louisa Watson, has devoted time, passion and energy to making a positive impact on the planet. They’ve committed to pioneering initiatives and continually drive progress through both the resort and the hospitality industry.

The resort has saved 1300 tonnes of Co2 by switching to renewable tariffs, and offset over 500 metric tonnes of carbon by tree planting. [turn into image]

Through the Resort’s energy-saving Room2Grow scheme, 23,000 trees have already been planted on the site, with thousands more to come, as a result of eco-conscious guests who stay more than one night choosing to have a tree planted instead of having their room cleaned.

A year ago, Wyboston Lakes Resort announced a 4-year Green Energy Roadmap as the foundation for its plan to become self-sufficient by producing its own green energy using the natural resources available at the resort, which will help to achieve its Net Zero Carbon Emissions target. The site has been zero-to-landfill since 2015.

The resort’s commitment to sustainability has been independently accredited by earning gold awards from the Green Tourism Awards and the IACC, and the EcoSmart Platinum Venue Award from Greengage Solutions.

Wyboston Lakes’ net zero ambitions made them the perfect partner to support the Growth Hub in delivering Step into Net Zero Bedford Borough.  They’ll be hosting the first of our Step into Net Zero workshops this month, aiming to support Bedford Borough-based SMEs at the start of their sustainability journey.

Businesses taking part in the workshops will have the opportunity to hear in more detail about the work the resort has done and their future plans from their Sustainability Lead and industry Green Champion Louisa Watson.

We’re excited to be hosted by the resort this month and to be taking our businesses to such an inspiring, industry-leading organisation.
