Leading business brains come on board to boost Velocity Growth Hub

16 July 2015

An experienced marketing consultant with a passion for helping small businesses and the managing director of a manufacturing company have joined the board of directors at Velocity Growth Hub.

Velocity, the business support service delivered by the South East Midlands Local Enterprise Partnership, recently celebrated its first anniversary and has moved to bolster its ranks ahead of the second phase of its project this year.

Cathy Rhodes, who has experience of working with major global brands including Gillette, Heinz and Proctor & Gamble, set up her own consultancy business Culminas in Milton Keynes in 2000 and has now agreed to lend her marketing expertise to Velocity.

She said: “I first came across Velocity last year and immediately pricked up my ears when I heard what it was all about.

“I am passionate about helping small businesses succeed commercially and I have been involved in various Government support services. That landscape is incredibly complicated so the fact Velocity is trying to simplify that and make the whole process easier for small businesses is a huge attraction for me.

“I’m really looking forward to getting stuck in and helping in any way I can.”

Meanwhile, Roger Churchill, managing director of Lohmann Technologies, is hoping to bring his experience of helping to transform parts of Aylesbury’s business community to Milton Keynes in his new role.

He said: “Velocity has achieved an incredible amount in a very short space of time and I am looking forward to building on that. Since moving the business to Milton Keynes I have been looking at getting involved in a community project and this feels like a perfect fit.

“Milton Keynes is home to some extremely high quality technology companies and that is an area I’d really like to see grow further in the years ahead.”

Velocity has so far helped a total of 1,314 business across the South East Midlands, giving out more than £1m in grants, creating 433 new jobs and safeguarding 498 others.

Ray Levene, chair of the Velocity board, said: “We’re tremendously excited to welcome Roger and Cathy onto the Velocity board. They bring with them a wealth of knowledge and expertise which will undoubtedly be of huge benefit to the wider business community across the South East Midlands.”
